the evolution of street style & why I still love it. plus, what I bought last weekend.
outfit inspo ahead
Last weekend was what I call my personal Christmas- aka the A Current Affair vintage show in L.A. Before you envision a dark room filled with dusty dresses, please know it takes place in a large, light filled space downtown, and all my best finds have come from this show- most notably a Jil Sander trench, Issey Miyake cableknit sweater, perfectly slouchy Comme Des Garcons tank, Prada slip dress, JPG mesh tops and all my best band tees. Also, not to sound like Elle Woods, but I did see Cameron Diaz there a few years ago (and sadly, I did not get to talk her out of buying a truly hideous angora sweater).
L.A. doesn’t have a fashion week (where most street style snaps are taken), and it’s such a spread out city that it’s rare to find a large group of well dressed girls and gays all in one place. That is why this show holds such a special place in my heart. It is obviously nothing like fashion week, except for the fact that there is tons of outfit inspiration to be had, and the girls are definitely dressing for the girls (as we should everyday, in my opinion). Basically, there’s street style but women aren’t posing for pics, they’re trying to find the perfect pair of vintage Levi’s.
Now, last weekend was a bit different seeing as it was actually cold in Los Angeles, but there was still inspiration to be found. The most common footwear of choice was the Wales Bonner Adidas sneaker. I saw every iteration possible, typically paired with denim. Loafers were also a shopper favorite- specifically these. Looks I loved included a cropped blazer with jeans, black tights with a denim mini skirt, red pants with a classic Gucci fanny pack, and a slew of very chic all black ensembles. I went with a pretty basic shopping fit- vintage Celine cargos and my favorite white tank (I left my jacket in the car so I’d have less to carry on the way out, but maybe that’s why I ended up purchasing two coats?)
The irony of me waxing poetic about an event that took place on the same day Balenciaga chose to have a fashion show in L.A. is not lost on me, but I’m more inspired by the outfits I saw IRL than the ones I saw on that runway or celebrities in attendance.
It’s unlikely you need to purchase something splashy in order to achieve the same well dressed vibe that so many of those Vogue famous women have. If you find yourself feeling uninspired or wanting to get out of an outfit rut- I encourage you to play with textures, silhouettes and proportions. Sometimes all your outfit needs is a remix. Below, pieces I use as a starting point (find similar in your closet or shop these).
knit tube top. camo pants. Loewe sunnies. striped crop top. classic Levi’s. Manolos (on sale). patent box bag. Loewe cardigan.
& because this is, after all, a shopping newsletter- my purchases from the show are pictured below. (Jean Paul Gaultier jacket, Jil Sander trench, green arrow and opal moon charms)

This is so well put ! I love the context of fashion aggregating culturally in this manner due to the urban and spread out layout of LA. Such an interesting take!
