Earlier this week I was so inundated with sale content (one of the hazards of writing a newsletter like this is that I could look at sales for hours and call it research), that I convinced myself I would need an entirely new wardrobe for the summer and specifically, my upcoming travels. THE DRAMA.
I shut my laptop and decided to style some fits with pieces I already own because I while I do love a good sale, I wanted to work with my current wardrobe before making any more purchases.
MIX SEASONS. No, I’m not saying you should wear your snow boots with a bikini but clothes are clothes and, above all else, they’re meant to be worn! I’ve invested in some nicer jackets and layering pieces over the years because much to my surprise ( and horror, tbh) LA can get quite chilly sometimes. My end all, be all favorite is this Miu Miu blazer I found on TheRealReal (similar here). I think it adds texture to an otherwise very summery look. Another example of off-season dressing could be pairing a linen dress with boots. (tank. shorts. bag.)
Match the vibes - You know when straight men use the term “full send”? I don’t know what that means in the sports world but to me, that’s committing to the vibe! These Prada shorts (another real real find, almost identical here) and this rugby are both sporty and comfortable. Pair your favorite girly, sporty, boho, minimalist, or preppy pieces together and go full send.
Mix metals - It can be super limiting to match the hardware on your bag/shoes to your jewelry. Yes, it can make things look more cohesive at times, but not ALL the time. Mix and match for a more interesting look. (spiral necklace. black bag. thrifted Margiela dress, similar-ish here.)
Don’t wait to wear the new - AKA you might have options you’ve never even considered. I bought these shorts on the Mr.Porter sale over a month ago but just wore them for the first time yesterday. I got this fringe skirt (technically, shorts, on final sale, true to size and still available here) two months ago and just pulled it out of my closet. I think this is pretty common to some extent. We feel the need to ‘save’ our clothes… but for what?! Pull out your unworns and wear them!
Have a styled ‘when in doubt’ outfit- For me, it’s an all black look with fun shoes and accessories. The caveat on this is that I think it’s helpful to have both a casual and dressy when in doubt. This way, you’ve really covered your bases. I’d wear the top look on a date night with my husband or to an event, and the one below during the day for meetings and appointments. Your ‘when in doubt’ look could be a stunning dress, or jeans and a sweater, just make sure it’s something you feel confident in! // outfit 1- top. pants. shoes. outfit 2- shorts. bodysuit. sneaks. cardigan.
Know what you’re drawn to - Ok, very similar to the last one but I think creating great looks with stuff you already own really comes down to knowing your closet and knowing yourself. I said this yesterday on instagram, but right now I’m loving these shorts for hot days. They’re more comfortable than bike shorts. The color is surprisingly neutral and I find myself reaching for them far more often than I anticipated. Play around with some of your favorite go-tos- maybe you’re only wearing your favorite jeans with a bodysuit or tank but they would look amazing under a crochet dress!
All that I “need” to buy is a new swimsuit or two and I’m going to be honest with you… I pretty much only buy from L*Space or Hunza G. Those are my tried and true brands and the only ones I’m willing to spend my money on… and even then it’s hard because swimsuits aren’t exactly versatile when you’re not at a pool or beach. So anyway, I bought this. And also this, which is more of an experiment because this brand is definitely not catered to people who have given birth, but the stripes are cute. TBD!
If you *are* in the mood to browse, the Siedres x Mango collab dropped today and it’s pretty fun.
