My favorite scene from the Barbie movie was when Barbie complimented an older woman at the bus stop, calling her beautiful, and the woman replied ‘I know’, with a twinkle in her eye. And while I do think you can still take down the patriarchy even if you get quarterly botox like I do, it was a scene that left me emotional about getting older.
Speaking of which, my birthday was a few days ago. I didn’t plan on feeling older so immediately, but my daughter came down with a virus and my sweet rescue pup, Finn, had to have emergency spinal surgery. Luckily everyone is on the mend! (perhaps even my sanity is, too). I wanted to share some things that get better with age- because I like to think that’s what’s happening to all of us and maybe some of the things in our closet, too.
There are some things new, heritage claiming (& usually faking) brands just can’t replicate. I LOVE a shiny new thing as much as the next person (like this just launched Loewe collection, for instance), but I also adore a slightly beat up bag, a watch that has been passed down from generation to generation, vintage Levi’s, and a leather jacket that has been to more concerts than I have.
Anyway, here’s my list of things that will age gracefully, some new and some found on TRR. If you already own iterations of these items, great! I encourage you to wear them often.
The Row Domino Bag // I own a very similar version of this Row bag (pictured in the collage above by The Row, called the India), and love it. The shape is timeless and I’m a sucker for a big bag, as we’ve discussed (here, icymi). It would be cooler with some keychains and charms a lá the Miu Miu runway. (bag charms are next week’s topic, btw). Similar idea with this vintage Gucci and love this bucket bag.
Dries Van Noten Denim Trench // An investment with a capital I, but !! you know I’m a sucker for Dries. I imagine this denim looking perfectly worn in after a few wears and also fun with some pins on the lapel. Less pricey option here.
Gucci loafers // Hot take- brand new loafers look a little…dorky to me. I prefer mine a little worn in and not so shiny. I have never once regretted a Gucci shoe purchase, one of the few Italian brands still focused on quality. The extra tread gives you a little boost and makes them more durable than their classic thin-soled loafer. If you’re looking for something more budget friendly, I love these.
Watch // Respectfully, I will never be an Apple Watch girl. I’m already petite and they make me look like a Spy Kid. I am hoping that I have enough willpower this year to save and buy myself a really nice watch like this one that I can give my daughter one day.
Leopard print // A print that I have loved with my whole heart as long as I’ve been dressing myself! To me, a neutral and to some, a statement but overall timeless when worn well. Bag above is Ferragamo, also love this belt and this vintage tote.
Taking care of your skin! // I’m making a concerted effort to treat my skin better after being read to filth by a facialist last month (in my defense, I had a bad reaction to some supplements, but anyway). I’m double cleansing at night, using this on my neck, and spending too much on heavy duty eye cream. But !! I’ve seen my efforts pay off in that my skin is brighter and I can get away with just a tinted moisturizer most days. I’m also loving the Hanni shave pillow for my legs. I also got this sampler kit for Christmas and fell in love with a few of these products, specifically the hyaluronic serum and face cream.
Nice jewelry and a place to store it! - velvet jewelry box. // necklace // drop earrings // round tray // white sapphire band // gold link bracelet // emerald bracelet // emerald and sapphire earrings (all Dorsey jewelry, I own a few of these pieces myself and wear them often.)
leather jacket - The jacket pictured is Acne Studios and was one of my first grown-up purchases a few years ago (purchased with a now nonexistent industry discount). Leather jackets are probably top of my list for things that get better with age, as I was recently gifted a really wonderful vintage one by a dear friend that I’ve loved wearing. There is a noteworthy selection on TRR- I suggest shopping by size/color to narrow down the overwhelming options. Here are a few that caught my eye- This 90’s Ferragamo is stunning and a great price. Also of note- this Coach jacket that will look even cooler after a few years of wear. A studded suede Halfboy piece in amazing condition that retailed for at least double. A beautiful vintage Jil Sander and early 2000’s Prada biker are also tempting.
the vintage jacket! what a great gift.
BTW……..
Has anyone tried the new clear Glossier sunscreen? I just ordered and will report back but I’m excited to try!
I'm officially a Tibi fangirl. I’ve always admired
’s talent but these jeans and these pants are possibly two of the most worn things in my closet right now. I can’t wait to dive into her Style Class series (shared on their instagram this week). These shoes make me want to play dress up and pretend I’m Carrie Bradshaw hopping through New York City.
Thank you for reading. If you enjoyed please tap the heart below and share with a fashion-loving friend. xx,Liz
Nobody let me buy that foldable Loewe raffia bag plz. You may need to break my fingers… also better with age: any Hermes bag. Brand new feels show off-y on me and beaten up feels relaxed and yummy. Happy birthday and may we celebrate with a cheers together! 😘
Would love to see how you style the Tibi pants! Have been contemplating Sids…
